10:54 PM After Singapore's separation from the Federation of Malaysia, why was defence one of the government's priorities?
- British announced they would withdraw military forces from SG by end of 1971
- Sg now had to build up its own defence to protect herself from internal & external threats
- didn't want a repeat of Jap. Occ.

What were the steps taken by the government to address the issue of defence in Singapore?
- established Ministry of Interior and Defence (MID) under Dr Goh K S to look into formation of national defence force
- made it compulsory for all SG males to enlist for NS when 18!
- set up SG armd forces (SAF) training institute in June 1966 to provide military training
- members of Parliament explained importance of NS at get-togethers to parents?!
- set up a nacy and air force (repeated point - SAF)
- conducted training overseas and getting help from foreign military advisors
- SG govt established military co-operations to further ensure SG's security
e.g. Five-Power Defence agreement signed by Britian, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore

In approaching this question, we further question
1. WHO SAID THAT?
2. WHY DID HE SAY THAT?
3. WHAT PROBLEMS DID SG FACE THAT MADE HIM SAY THAT
4. HOW DID SG OVERCOME THESE PRBS? WHAT DEVELOPMENTS BURST OUT BECAUSE OF THIS?

2. Because he thought Singapore couldn't survive on its own without Malaysia,
who is a strong economic/political/social/physical backing on Singapore.
(Malaysia, you see, was bigger, politically experienced and developed, able to
solve econ probs in sg, and socially more stable)

3. SG FACED PROBLEMS IN SEPARATION SUCH AS:
1. Limited land space
Little place to develop/let people live
2. Weak industry base
Undiversified econ base, due to dependence on entrepot trade
3. Fall in trade

4. Lacking in natural resources
Not enough to cater to the whole population
5. Growing population
Look at above point
Lack of housing and jobs to cater to them
6. British withdrawal
Singapore was left a. defenseless

cheap houses with good facilities for the people
high-rise: more space for industrialization

to the people of sg then, separation was indeed a "moment of anguish" as they were left with a new, inexperienced government and was saddled with a bunch of seemingly impossible problems (given the situation then)
now, looking back, it was a TURNING POINT, because if it weren't for the separation, sg wouldn't have been forced to make rapid changes and improvements to become the remarkable country it is today. BE PROUD. sg would've been dependent on m'sia.
so, then it was a "moment of anguish", now it's a "moment of celebration" kind of thing.

in case you've misplaced the lit quote recitation assessment handout (there's one extra in the cupboard... i think), here are the important points:

• you must say aloud and abide by this format at the start of the video recording:
  "Taken from Act _ Scene _, Page _, Character name: _, Level Gold/Silver/Lead"
  to signal the end of the recording, end off with "Thank you."
• USE ONLY THE FILE FORMAT .WMV
• label the video clips with your class, full name, reg no and date recorded e.g.
  "213_Name_Regno_210909"
• SUBMIT THIS TO ME (MICHELLE) VIA EMAIL (not sure if it can fit though...?), THUMBDRIVE OR ANY OTHER WAY BY TUESDAY, 22 SEPTEMBER 2009 (so that i can make sure that your video is in the disc or tell you if anything's wrong)
• also remember to do your reflections and pass them to me on wednesday, 23 sept (:

1. Monday, 14 Sept 2009 [TOMORROW] - all Sec 2s to assemble in the KS Chee for HSSRP briefing. don't be late.
2. Change in timetable effective from 21 Sept - that's Term 4 Week 2, so you can take your time and check out the new timetable.

And the last and very important one:

Math Indices GA is on Thursday, 17 Sept which is already pretty lucky since some classes take it on Wednesday but we don't cos we don't have math on Wednesday. Take note or you'll get startled on Thursday, though I'm pretty sure Ms Syah will remind us tomorrow during Math.

Okay. Remember that school starts tomorrow. Try not to pon.
