After Singapore's separation from the Federation of Malaysia, why was defence one of the government's priorities?
- British announced they would withdraw military forces from SG by end of 1971
- Sg now had to build up its own defence to protect herself from internal & external threats
- didn't want a repeat of Jap. Occ.
What were the steps taken by the government to address the issue of defence in Singapore?
- established Ministry of Interior and Defence (MID) under Dr Goh K S to look into formation of national defence force
- made it compulsory for all SG males to enlist for NS when 18!
- set up SG armd forces (SAF) training institute in June 1966 to provide military training
- members of Parliament explained importance of NS at get-togethers to parents?!
- set up a nacy and air force (repeated point - SAF)
- conducted training overseas and getting help from foreign military advisors
- SG govt established military co-operations to further ensure SG's security
e.g. Five-Power Defence agreement signed by Britian, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore
